[DIY Recipe] Korean Style Ice Coffee?

Koreans like drinking coffee. That’s why coffee shops are everywhere just like what we described 7-eleven back in 10 years in Hong Kong: There must be one around the corner. So next question you may ask, what type of coffee do they drink normally? A-M-E-R-I-C-A-N-O. Americano and americano. I really think that a coffee shop in Korea can absolutely survive even it only sells Americano all day long. But not everyone has an espresso machine at home to make his own Americano every morning. Then the instant coffee mix becomes the best substitute at home, office, small family-restaurants. Don’t ever look down on this little pack of instant coffee mix! It’s gonna give an extraordinary sensation to your taste bud, and you will be amazed! Welcome to Korea’s coffee world.

한국 사람들은 커피를 정말 좋아해요. 그래서 한국에 가면 홍콩에서 편의점을 찾을 때 “저기 모퉁이에 분명히 편의점이 있을 거야.”라고 말하듯 전국 어디든지 쉽게 커피숍을 찾아볼 수 있어요. 그럼 이제 여러분들은 “한국 사람들은 어떤 커피를 주로 마셔요?”라고 물을 거예요. 그럼 저는 아-메-리-카-노 또 아메리카노 계속 아메리카노라고 대답할 수 있어요.
만약에 커피숍에서 다른 메뉴 없이 매일같이 아메리카노만 판다고 해도 망할 일은 없을 거라고 생각해요. 한국 사람들은 그 정도로 아메리카노를 사랑해요. ‘아메리카노’라는 제목의 노래도 있을 정도니까요!

There are numerous instant coffee mix brands in Korea, and Maxim is one of the most popular ones which you may also easily find in Hong Kong’s 759 store. I’ve got a original (red) and a mocha gold mild (yellow), so they are all I need to make both ice coffee latte and ice mocha.

In this recipe (servings: 2 cups), you will need the following:

4 packs x mocha coffee mix, 2 cups x water, 1 tbs x sugar, 1 cup x fresh milk, 2 cups x ice

Take out your blender and add water, coffee mix, sugar into it. Press the button and blend it well. At this point, you should be able to see some foam formed a top layer once it’s ready. Set aside.

Then fetch a cup/ glass / tumbler, fill with icy ice. For ice, you can adjust the amount according to your personal preference. And here I put half cup. Slowly pour the coffee mixture (from the blender) until 3/4 glass full (again you can always adjust the amount!!)

hello, my cute little milk jug. Now pour the milk slowly onto your coffee until the rim of the glass. Add a straw if you’d like. I adore these paper straws a lot!

Give a stir to let milk and coffee combine well. To be honest, I cannot tell the difference between this homemade mocha and the one at Starbucks. Maybe it’s even better?! Try it out yourself and you’ll know what I mean. Enjoy!
